Ступая на историческое место, невольно становишься его частью, проникаешься его духом, понимаешь, что когда-то здесь происходило что-то важное... Так было сегодня со мной на Сапун-горе, возвышенности, пережившей Великую Отечественную войну.
Во время Великой Отечественной войны гора являлась ключевой оборонительной позицией на подступах к городу; здесь велись ожесточённые бои с немецкими войсками в ходе обороны Севастополя 1941—1942 годов и Крымской операции 1944 года. В память о подвиге советских бойцов в ноябре 1944 года на Сапун-горе воздвигнут обелиск воинской Славы. В 1970 году зажжён вечный огонь. В 1964-65 и 1974 годах монумент реконструирован. На его основании расположены мемориальные доски с наименованиями воинских частей, освобождавших Севастополь, на мемориальных стелах выбиты имена 240 Героев Советского Союза, удостоенных этого звания за освобождение города.
(When you step on a land where history had been made you become its part, tune into the air of that place and understand that something important happened here a long time ago... It happened to me today on Sapun-gora (Sapun Ridge), a hill that saw World War II.
It became the arena of fierce battle during the siege of Sevastopol (1941-1942), and also during its recapturing in 1944.
When defending Sevastopol the Soviet troops held the Sapun Ridge and could observe German movements to the city from the south. It took Wehrmacht nearly 2 weeks of desperate fighting to take control over these positions in late June 1942. As a consequence, Soviet troops had to evacuate from Crimea.
In 2 years, on the final stage of the Crimean Offensive the assault of Sapun-gora on the 7th of May, 1944 was successful for Red Army. On 9 May 1944, just over one month after the start of the battle, Sevastopol fell. German forces were evacuated from Sevastopol to Constanța.
Later in 1944 the first monuments to the Soviet warriors on this place were erected, in 1959 the diorama showing the assault of the German fortifications was opened.)

Внутри музея-диорамы проходила интересная экскурсия. Описание боевых действий, имена героев и важные события. Честно говоря, как могут люди оставаться равнодушными, я понять не могу...
Фотографий внутри сделать получилось очень мало. Фотографировать там нельзя, но я исхитрилась и сняла пару схем наступлений, пока не видел никто.
(Inside the doirama museum there was an interesting excursion. A narration of the battle, names of heroes and key events. To be honest, I can't understand how people could stay unmoved by this...
I managed to take very few pictures inside. People are not allowed to photograph, but I cheated and shot a couple of maps of onslaught when nobody watched.)

Конечно, впечатление грандиозное. Оно усиливается еще и тем, что русские солдаты все же отвоевали Сапуг-гору у наступающих немцев с маленькими потерями. Я думаю, враг теперь 10 раз подумает, прежде чем сунется сюда =)
(I was deeply impressed. It impresses me even more that Soviet soldiers managed to regain Sapun Ridge from Germans with little losses. I am quite sure that enemies will think twice before trying this again.)

Ну, и собственно, сама диорама "Штурм Сапун-горы". Фотографии не могут передать всю красоту этого полуобъемного произведения, конечно. Длина картины - 25 метров, а общая площадь макетов перед ней - 88 квадратных метров.
(This is the diorama "An assault of Sapun Ridge". Of course photos cannot fully express the splendid of this half 3D piece of art. The lenght of the picture is 25 metres and the full area of miniatures in front of it is 88 square metres.)
